AT LONG LAST: The first lady finally wore an Oscar de la Renta dress earlier this month, after avoiding his looks for seven years. One of Oscar de la Renta's biggest pet peeves was the continual public snubbing by first lady Michelle Obama. The Dominican-born, New York-based designer who died at the age of 82 this week, made a career out of dressing first ladies. He rose to fame in the 1960s as the official couturier of Jacqueline Kennedy before going on to design gowns for inaugurations and public appearances for Nancy Reagan, Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton. Throughout her seven-year tenure as FLOTUS, she has, like the Obama administration, championed change and newness, by wearing up-and-coming brands including Jason Wu, Rachel Roy and Thakoon. De la Renta, the old guard of American fashion, was highly critical of Michelle Obama's wardrobe, which didn't include any of his designs. In 2009 he lambasted her for wearing a J.Crew cardigan during her private audience with the Queen at Buckingham Palace, and again in 2011 for wearing an Alexander McQueen gown - the same dress Amal Clooney wore during her wedding in September - to a state dinner with the Chinese president. He lamented the lost opportunity for the local industry, given Obama is considered to be the Kate Middleton of the US - everything she wears sells out and garners metres and hours of media coverage. "I'm not talking about my clothes, my business. I'm old, and I don't need it. But there are a lot of young people, very talented people here who do," he said. However, his feud with Obama ended when she wore one of his creations for the first time two weeks before his death. Over the years commentators considered her avoidance of de la Renta was a way to distinguish herself from her predecessors, but there were many sly smiles when she hosted a cocktail party at the White House wearing a creation by her biggest fashion critic. The 50-year-old wore a navy cocktail dress from de la Renta's fall collection to welcome the American fashion fraternity and about 150 students to Washington to celebrate the Fashion Education Workshop - an initiative of her Reach Higher initiative which aims to encourage young fashion lovers to pursue education and careers in the industry. Dozens of members of the media and many of de la Renta's peers were present, including J.Crew creative director Jenna Lyons, Diane von Furstenberg and Prabal Gurung, so her sartorial selection for the occasion was especially pointed. It was seen as an olive branch to the man who made a living making Hollywood starlets and ladies who lunch elegant for close to half a century.
