ROGER EBERT - June 18, 1942 ~ April 4, 2013 R.I.P.

Roger Joseph Ebert (pron.: /ˈiːbərt/; June 18, 1942 – April 4, 2013) was an American journalist, film critic and screenwriter. Ebert was primarily known for his film criticism, which often mixed dry sarcasm with quirky opinion. Born in Champaign, Illinois in 1942, Ebert was fascinated with journalism from a young age. He began his career as a professional critic in 1967, writing for the Chicago Sun-Times, a position he held for over 45 years till his death.[11] His work soon made him the first film critic to win the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism, in 1975.[12] As of 2010, his columns were syndicated to more than 200 newspapers in the United States and abroad. He held honorary degrees from the University of Colorado, the AFI Conservatory, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Ebert helped popularize nationwide television film criticism when he teamed with rival critic Gene Siskel to host Siskel and Ebert and The Movies (and other titles), a show that ran for 23 years. Siskel and Ebert would often verbally spar when debating a film, frequently trading humorous barbs. They also created the trademark phrase "Two Thumbs Up" on the program. After Siskel died in 1999, Ebert continued to host a similar program with Richard Roeper under various titles. In 1999, he began hosting an annual Film Festival in his native Illinois. In 2005, Ebert was the first film critic to be awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. After suffering post-surgical complications related to thyroid cancer in 2006 that left him unable to speak, he became a prolific voice online through Twitter, gaining a sizable following and a second wave of popularity. Ebert eventually died as a result of metastasized cancer on April 4, 2013.

Ebert was married to trial attorney Charlie "Chaz" Hammelsmith. He leaves to mourn, his Wife, Step-daughter and two Step-Grandsons. Chaz Ebert is now vice president of the Ebert Company and has emceed Ebertfest. May GOD BLESS all of his Family & Friends and May Mr Ebert Rest In the POWER Of PEACE!!!
